"It's just not cosy".......

I received a message from this new client about a year ago....

" I'm inquiring about your services to help with a laundry room design and a paint colour selection for another room..."

One year later we still haven't touched either one of those spaces! Our first meetings discussion was how unused the lower rec room was, as it was not that "cosy". This was heartbreaking. This space needs to be a space where lots of new memories were made. This is when the focus was changed. I was determined to make this happen!......

The challenge was this:

* a large open room (24x18)

* high ceilings (9)

* fireplace stuck in the middle of a long wall

*horrible lighting

* very plain

Believe it or not, this home is only 10 years old!

BEFORE:

Time for a Space Change!

I threw together a fast sketch to show the rooms new layout to help creative a "cosy" tv corner.

By keeping the built ins large in size (120 inches in length and 24 inches deep), and floor to ceiling to help the ceilings feel a little lower and cozier. Butting the cabinets against one corner will help the fireplace feel closer to the tv area vs. floating on a large wall with high ceilings. Then I moved the very large sectional sofa closer in the new tv/fireplace "cosy" part of the room.

Next I pulled the new corner together by painting the fireplace wall and the "built ins" wall one colour and the other two walls another colour....making it even cosier. :)

This home owner is very talented with his workmanship! :)

Let the transformation begin!!!!......

We used 4 30 inch IKEA kitchen base cabinets...but got custom with the top......

We wanted the look of concrete but without the weight or maintenance. This handy man used an epoxy and it turned out beautiful!

He strapped this wood paneling to match the foundation jet out give space to hide wires for the tv etc.

And the shelving is being built !!! :)

Goodbye green walls!!! Up goes a darker grey on the fireplace and built in walls.....and a lighter grey on the other two walls

Next, decor! :)

There was a few family heirloom pieces that needed to be in this space.....one that came out of the closet...yes closet lol...was this beautiful rocking chair!!!

This required a trip to Ottawa street in Hamilton to shop fabric for this piece! :) Oh what fun in a snow storm we had.! :)

In the end we did well! We updated this chair but kept its old charm! :) Special thank you to Mike's Upholstery in Welland and his amazing work!

We took this chest and added feet to create a nice table.

I surprised the family and made some changes to update their family crest. It was an emotional moment for all.

Which join in a special area dedicated to many special memories of loved ones.

Check out our SPACE CHANGE! : ) (not "staged" but important things to this family)

A nice large piece... my clients found this at "Hobby Lobby", and we added custom 12x18 inch canvases.

A space for a "fluffy" girl and a hide away for a little lady. :)

When my client sent me this text including..."This is now my favourite space..."

I think I've done my job. :)

Now we are moving on to two bathrooms.....not sure what happened to the laundry room lol.
